Police in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, have arrested one of their own following a shocking incident in which a student from Kitale National Polytechnic was shot and critically injured after an early morning altercation.
The officer, who is attached to Kitale Police Station, is currently in custody as investigations continue. Authorities say he will be arraigned in court once the inquiry is complete.
According to a police statement, the suspect was positively identified by witnesses during an identification parade conducted on Thursday.
Those who were present at the scene reportedly recognized him as the man who opened fire on the student.
The confrontation occurred at around dawn on October 22, 2025, at Norec Shopping Centre in Kibomet area. Witnesses told investigators that an argument erupted between the student and a man later confirmed to be a police officer.
The situation escalated quickly, and the officer allegedly drew his firearm and shot the student at close range before escaping on a motorcycle.
Police officers who arrived at the scene recovered two spent 9mm cartridges and a bullet head near a pool table shop. Bloodstains were also visible on the floor, confirming the violent nature of the encounter.
The victim was rushed to Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital, where he remains admitted in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have joined the case to determine whether the firearm used in the shooting was government-issued and to uncover the motive behind the attack.
Authorities have assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, promising justice for the victim as questions continue to mount over the officer’s conduct.
