A cloud of fear has descended on Migori Town after a 48-year-old M-Pesa agent was shot dead by armed robbers on Thursday night, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to dispatch a special team to hunt down her killers.
The victim, identified as Mary Mongare, was attacked moments after closing her M-Pesa shop around 9 p.m. on October 23, 2025. According to police, she had just deposited KSh 500,000 from a customer before heading home with her daughter.
The two boarded a motorcycle but later alighted at Sala area along the Migori–Kisii highway, where their nightmare began. Two masked gunmen reportedly ambushed them, demanding their valuables at gunpoint.
When Mongare’s daughter screamed for help, the attackers opened fire. The businesswoman was struck three times — in the right ankle, left wrist, and under the chin — before the thugs fled with her bag containing an M-Pesa phone and a flask.
Residents rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment. Her body was later transferred to the Migori County mortuary for a postmortem.
Migori County Police Commander confirmed that no suspects have been arrested, but detectives are pursuing crucial leads.
“We are following strong intelligence trails and will not rest until those behind this brutal killing are caught,” said one officer familiar with the probe.
The attack has sparked outrage and fear among locals, who say incidents of armed robberies in Migori have been rising in recent months. Police have since increased night patrols within the town and its outskirts to curb insecurity.
Authorities suspect a criminal gang may be behind a string of violent robberies targeting business operators and mobile money agents in the region.
Meanwhile, in a separate case in Isinya, Kajiado County, police have opened investigations after a decomposed body was discovered on a farm.
The deceased, identified as Edward Mukira, was found by residents who were alerted by a foul smell. The cause of death remains unclear pending postmortem results.
Both incidents have renewed calls for tighter security measures across the country as police race to bring the culprits to justice.
