On Wednesday evening, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki warned opposition leaders who are chanting "Wantam" and talking about plans to remove President William Ruto from power in the next general election.
Kindiki said that such chants and political noise will not help the country in any way. He explained that instead of shouting slogans, leaders should come together and find ways to solve the problems that ordinary Kenyans are facing.
“Chanting ‘Wantam’ will not reduce the cost of living. Leaders should focus on unity and solutions, not division,” Kindiki said during a conference in Meru county.
He also warned that leaders who are already thinking about getting government positions in 2027 will be rejected by the people.
“Let no leader think that by attacking the government now, they will be rewarded in future. Kenyans are watching,” he added.
However, in a strong response, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said that Kenyans have a right to speak out when things are going wrong in the country.
“We must not fear. Kenyans have the right to talk when they feel betrayed by those in power,” Gachagua said.
He also said that when a government lies to the people and fails to keep its promises, it should be criticized.
“If the government keeps lying, we will keep talking. We are the voice of the people,” Gachagua added.
