A post-mortem examination on Albert Ojwang’, who died while in custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, has confirmed he suffered multiple injuries consistent with physical assault—contradicting earlier police claims.
Government pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia revealed on Tuesday that the injuries on Ojwang’s body don’t support the police's explanation that he fatally hit his head against a cell wall. According to Dr. Midia, the pattern of trauma—especially on Ojwang’s head—doesn't match what would typically occur from a single blow against a hard surface like a wall.
“If someone hit a wall, you’d expect localized frontal injuries,” said Midia. “But Ojwang’ had scattered wounds—on the face, the sides, the back of the head, and even on the scalp.”
He added that there were also significant injuries across the body, including the torso and arms—suggesting a violent encounter involving more than one blow, and certainly not self-inflicted.
The autopsy was conducted in the presence of an independent pathologist representing the family, Dr. Mutuma Zambezi, who supported Midia’s conclusions.
These findings directly challenge a police report issued Sunday that claimed Ojwang’ had injured himself while in his cell.
Ojwang's death has sparked national outrage, with public figures like former Chief Justice David Maraga calling for government accountability and even urging a shutdown in protest.
