Why Raila Odinga’s Baptism Was Kept Secret — Bishop Finally Reveals Hidden Detail During Burial

The final funeral rites for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga are currently underway in Bondo, Siaya County, drawing thousands of mourners and national leaders.

During the solemn ceremony, Bishop David Kodia of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Diocese of Bondo, offered a rare revelation about a private chapter in Raila’s spiritual life — his baptism.

According to Bishop Kodia, Raila personally chose to be baptized under the ACK denomination because he wanted to retain his African name — a decision that reflected his deep respect for his cultural identity.

“It was his wish that his baptism be conducted within the Anglican Church, as it aligned with his belief in preserving his name and heritage,” the bishop explained.

He added that Raila’s confirmation into the church had been delayed for a long period to respect his personal convictions.

Bishop Kodia noted that if more time were available, the church would have also conducted a Holy Communion service in his honor.

The bishop emphasized that the late ODM leader was being accorded a full Christian burial at his Kang’o Ka’Jaramogi home in Bondo, following the final public viewing of his body at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu.

Earlier, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had announced that only 500 guests would be allowed at the graveside, citing the need for privacy during the family’s final farewell.

“This is a solemn occasion. We ask Kenyans to give the family space to mourn quietly,” Murkomen stated.

As the ceremony continues, the church’s exclusive role in Raila’s baptism and final send-off symbolizes the deep reverence and honor accorded to the long-serving statesman — a man whose faith, culture, and conviction shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.
