As the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) mourned the passing of its long-time leader Raila Odinga, his sister, Ruth Odinga, delivered a firm message to party members, dismissing emerging factions and calling for unity.
Speaking at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County, Ruth cautioned those within ODM who she accused of attempting to steer the party against her late brother’s wishes.
“What you said about our party must remain. You told me the day before you passed away that we must be united. ODM must be united, and if it is not strong, we will not achieve what we stand for,” Ruth recalled, paying tribute to Raila’s vision for the party.
She added, “ODM belongs to all of us. We cannot have one ODM here and another led by someone who thinks they own the party. Some of those who want to take over don’t even understand how the party was founded.”
Ruth’s remarks come in the backdrop of growing speculation within the party, particularly after Raila signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kenya Kwanza government in March 2025.
The deal had sparked divisions, with some members openly expressing dissatisfaction over the alignment with the government.
Despite these internal tensions, Ruth made it clear that ODM would remain a united front, ready to enter negotiations or work with other stakeholders as one cohesive party.
Her statements followed subtle signals from Raila’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, who expressed a willingness to work with President William Ruto’s government, framing it as a continuation of her father’s legacy.
Winnie currently serves as a Member of Parliament in the East African Legislative Assembly, a position she holds through ODM nomination.
Ruth’s warning underscores the high stakes within ODM’s leadership and highlights the challenge ahead for party unity as Kenya navigates the post-Raila political landscape.
