Ruth Odinga Confronts ODM Leaders in Bondo Moments After Oburu Is Officially Declared ODM Boss, Reveals What They Shouldn’t Expect

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has delivered a bold message to members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), warning them to stop relying on the influence of her late brother Raila Odinga to win elections.

Speaking shortly after Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga was officially endorsed as the new ODM party leader during a delegates’ meeting in Bondo, Ruth stated clearly that a new era of accountability had begun — and that leaders should not expect automatic political blessings or sympathy votes.

The event, which took place amid heavy rains, brought together delegates from across Nyanza to mark a symbolic transition in ODM’s leadership following Raila Odinga’s death.

The endorsement of Dr. Oburu Oginga was received with chants of unity and renewal, signaling the party’s determination to move forward while honoring Raila’s legacy.

Ruth Odinga, however, used her speech to confront complacency within the party, insisting that ODM leaders must now connect directly with the people and prove themselves through service, performance, and results — not lineage or name recognition.

“This is not the time to sit back and wait for Raila’s blessings. He is gone, and we must now show that ODM is built on values and action. Don’t expect votes because of names or history. Expect votes because of your work,” she stated firmly.

She went on to praise Oburu Oginga, describing him as a seasoned and principled leader who understands ODM’s roots and has the experience to steer the movement during this transition.

“Oburu is strong, disciplined, and understands what ODM stands for. He will lead firmly, but every leader must also do their part,” Ruth added.

The crowd, made up of party loyalists and grassroots delegates, echoed their support with chants for unity and renewal. Many described the transition as a moment of strength for ODM, proving that the movement can stand even after losing its founding leader.

Ruth concluded her address by reminding ODM members that today’s voters expect tangible results — not promises.

She urged the party to reconnect with the grassroots, deliver real change, and maintain the trust that Raila Odinga built over decades.

“Voters have changed. They want leaders who listen, deliver, and serve. Let’s not disappoint them,” she said.

As ODM charts a new path under Oburu Oginga’s leadership, the message from Bondo was clear — Raila’s legacy will live on, but the era of depending solely on his name is over.
