Tension is brewing ahead of Raila Odinga’s burial in Bondo after Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi issued a stern warning to Kenyans planning to attend the funeral.
Speaking ahead of the emotional send-off, the ODM legislator cautioned mourners against chanting the slogan “WANTAM” during the ceremony — a phrase that has recently gained traction on social media and among Raila’s supporters.
Atandi, who has shown support for President William Ruto’s administration, warned that anyone caught shouting the slogan would face serious consequences.
“If you are found chanting that, you’ll have caused yourself problems. You’ll be arrested and disciplined,” he declared.
The MP defended his remarks by insisting that President Ruto deserves respect during the national event, noting that the Head of State has shown goodwill and support to both the Odinga family and the Luo community during this period of mourning.
However, Atandi’s warning has drawn sharp criticism, with many Kenyans accusing him of undermining the very ideals Raila Odinga fought for — freedom of speech and political tolerance.
Political observers argue that Atandi’s statement highlights growing tensions within ODM and the broader opposition as the country navigates the post-Raila political landscape.
The clip of Atandi’s remarks has since gone viral, sparking heated debate online over whether his words were a call for order or an attempt to silence expression.
