Manyatta Member of Parliament, Gitonga Mukunji, has claimed that some of his political enemies and a few police officers planned to kill him while he was under arrest on July 7, 2024.
Mukunji was taken into custody during the Saba Saba demonstrations, together with a journalist and a boda boda rider. He was later charged with terrorism, but the case was thrown out by the Anti-Terrorism Court in Kahawa after prosecutors failed to provide evidence.
Speaking during a bursary award event at the University of Embu, the first-time legislator said his arrest was not just a normal case, but part of a larger plan to destroy his political career.
According to him, those behind the scheme wanted him to either be shot and framed as if he was resisting arrest, or die in a fake fire at the police station.
The MP said he is alive today because of God’s protection and also because of certain “well-wishers” inside the system who warned him and his family of the plot.
He further explained that his close aides were also picked up and pressured to write false statements against him, but they chose to remain loyal.
Mukunji added that the police service itself is divided. While some officers were allegedly part of the plot, others secretly helped by informing his relatives and ensuring he was not harmed.
Despite the threats, the legislator maintained that he will not be silenced or forced out of politics. He asked security agencies not to allow themselves to be used for political purposes and encouraged them to serve Kenyans fairly.
Mukunji concluded by saying that intimidation will not stop him from speaking up and fighting for the people he represents.
