Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has refuted reports that the Kenyan government spent billions to fund his bid for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Addressing the media at Mombasa State House on Monday, February 24, 2025, Raila, who had returned from Addis Ababa following his loss in the AUC elections, described the reports suggesting that Ksh 13 billion was spent on his campaign as "misleading."
"I’ve seen figures being thrown around, like Ksh 13 billion supposedly spent on my campaign. I don't know where these people are coming from or if they even understand what a billion really means. A billion for what?" Raila questioned.
A Focus on Transport Costs
Raila clarified that the government's financial involvement was limited to covering transport expenses. He emphasized that his campaign was modest, with no extravagant living or spending.
"The money that was spent was only for transport to help us travel. We didn't live luxuriously and ate what was offered to us during our travels," he explained.
He further shared that several countries were generous in offering accommodation and food during his visits, while the Kenyan government provided the necessary logistical support, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs available around the clock to assist.
Looking Ahead
When asked about his future, Raila expressed his commitment to serving Africa, and Kenya in particular, if the opportunity arose.
"I remain open to contributing to the African continent. More importantly, I’m committed to Kenya. I will consult with various stakeholders and announce my next steps in due course," Raila stated. "Stay tuned, I’ll have more to share soon."
Acknowledging Raila's Efforts
During the same event, President William Ruto praised Raila for his strong campaign, despite the defeat to Djibouti's candidate. He emphasized that Raila's candidacy united Kenyans, bringing together people from various political backgrounds.
"I am very proud of Raila’s candidacy. He presented a serious and formidable challenge across the African continent. His campaign brought Kenyans together, transcending political divides," President Ruto remarked.
He added that the AUC election was a fair process where all candidates, including Kenya's representative, had the chance to participate. Ruto concluded by affirming Kenya's ongoing commitment to the African Union's Agenda 2063 and to contributing to Africa's future.
